What is an AI rank tracker?

An AI rank tracker records where your brand stands among the names the AI engines mention when people ask them about what you do. MentionChecker gives it as the standings on every report: one list of every name the answers mentioned, ranked by how many answers mentioned each, your brand marked in it and every name you track on it wherever its number puts it, and your share of voice and average rank above it. There is no list of names to type in first: a name is on the list because an answer mentioned it.

MentionChecker is a pay-as-you-go AI visibility checker. What does rank mean in an AI answer?

Rank in an AI answer is your place among the names the answer mentioned, and an AI rank tracker counts it over every answer in a check because the answers differ. On 18 September 2026 we asked six AI engines for cosy puzzle games with no ads from the United States: all six answered with a list, and five different games were in first place, one of them first on two lists.

A MentionChecker report counts rank in two ways. Across the check, your place is by how many answers mentioned each name, and the report says it under share of voice as 3rd of 10 names the answers gave: ten names mentioned in all, two of them in more answers than yours. Inside one answer, when the AI engine listed names in order, the position it gave you is marked on that answer: your ChatGPT ranking on one question is the place ChatGPT gave you in its list, and those positions over every answer make your average rank.

What do AI share of voice and average rank mean?

AI share of voice is your mentions as a share of every mention in the check, all names counted together, and average rank is your average position in the answers that listed names in order. Both are counted from answers you can open on the same report.

Two names with the same count share a place. Average rank is counted only once at least three answers listed you in order, over those listings and no others, so one list is not enough. A question an AI engine gave no answer to is not counted, which is how 14 questions on four AI engines can be 51 answers. A name that is not a rival, an app store, a review site or a publisher mentioned beside you, can be excluded from share of voice on the report: the check is recounted at once, with no AI engine asked again and nothing charged. Which AI engines does an LLM rank tracker cover?

An LLM rank tracker covers the AI engines it asks, and a MentionChecker check asks up to six: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity are in the default pick, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot are there to add, and your first check asks ChatGPT and Gemini.

The standings, share of voice and average rank are counted over every answer in the check, whichever AI engine gave it, and the report shows the split as well: every question lists the AI engines that answered it and how many of those answers mentioned you. How do you track competitors' AI rank?

Competitor AI rank tracking starts from the standings, because every name the answers mentioned is already there with its share of answers: the names above yours are the rivals the AI engines mention more often, and the names mentioned on questions where you were absent are listed under Mentioned instead of you. Track on a name's row keeps it in every check from now on and gives it a line on the History chart beside yours from the third check on, so a rival whose count is rising is read from one check to the next, on the same questions, with its count in the check before and in the latest one next to yours.

Why does your AI rank change between checks?

Because the answers change, and the standings are counted from the answers. ChatGPT can search the web when it answers: OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT may search the web when a question would benefit from current information, and that its results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read on 18 September 2026), so the names in its answer to the same question, and your ChatGPT ranking with them, can differ from one check to the next. Every check keeps every answer as it was on the day it ran, so the standings from the check before read beside the latest, and History shows your mention rate, share of voice and average rank with their movement against the check before.

A check asks from one country, preselected from your web address, and History keeps one series per country, so a rank from the United States is compared with the check before it from the United States and never with one from another market.

How do you start tracking your AI rank?

Tracking your AI rank starts with one check, and the standings are on its report as it opens.

1. Run a check. Enter your website, approve or edit the questions the check proposes, pick the AI engines and the country, and run it. Your first check is free, with no card.
2. Read the standings. Track the names that matter, exclude the ones that are not rivals, and open the answers where the names ahead of you were mentioned.
3. Repeat it. Press Repeat on the report and choose daily, weekly or monthly, for one, three, six or twelve months. Every check after that is added to History with its movement against the one before.

What do I do when my AI rank drops?

Open the answers that stopped mentioning you and read the names ahead of you. Every question on the report opens to each AI engine's answer word for word, so your rank in ChatGPT on a question is read on ChatGPT's answer and your rank in Gemini on Gemini's. Under every answer are the pages it cited, and the AI citation checker page describes the sources list that ranks those pages over the whole check.

A fall in AI share of voice with your own count unchanged means another name was mentioned more often than before. Track that name, then change something on your site or on the pages the answers cited, and run the check again: History shows what moved.
